History of Prayagraj

Historically, Prayagraj or Kumbh Mela finds its references during the 6th century. In other words, it was 644 CE and before. Many mentions of Prayagraj and Triveni Sangam are in Rigved and Vedic period books. The holiness and divinity of Mahakumbh is on the next level.

Interestingly, the word Kumbh means Kalash. There are 2 different stories behind the Kumbh Mela. One of the story is belonging to the Samudra Manthan. In this, all dev and asuras (devils) were together and Bhagwan Vishnu was in his tortoise from (kurma Avatar).

During Manthan, Dhanvantri came out with the Amrit Kalash in his hands which both sides wanted. Therefore, the Gods ran with the Kalash to save it from Demons. They ran continuously for 12 days which is not equal to the 12 days of the Earth. Also, they rested at 4 places in those 12 days. The four places where they kept the Kalash, were Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Pryagraj.

The second story of Prayagraj

The second story is of snakes and Garud dev. It begins with a sage named Kashyap and his 2 wives. Both were real sisters, one was Kadru and the other was Vinata. One day Rishi Kashyap booned Kadru and Vinita. Kadru wanted 100 poisonous children and Vinata wanted fewer children but more powerful. From there, Kadru became known as the mother of all snakes on the Earth. Whereas, Vinita got only two eggs, and impatient Vinita broke one of them.

A half-developed human body came out of it in rage and asked his mother not to do the same with the other. After a long time, the second egg also broke and an eagle-faced human took birth. Arun and Garud were their names respectively. Unfortunately, Vinita had become the slave of Kadru and her 100 sons. To be free from slavery Garud brought Amrit Kalash from  Vaikunth. He also fought with Vishnu ji and some drops of Amrit fell on 4 places. After all, Garud successfully brought the Kalash but Vishnu Ji instantly disappeared the Kalash with his powers. At last, Vinita was free from slavery. The 4 places are the same as earlier.
